SELLERSBURG — On an emotional evening, Silver Creek rolled to a 64-26 win over New Washington in the season-opener for both Thursday.
Sophomore guard Jaclyn Emly tallied a game-high 27 points for the Dragons, who were playing with heavy hearts after the passing of Darrell Kingery, a long-time cross country and track & field coach at the school.
“Before the game I told them, ‘Just go out and play with passion. If you want to remember someone, that’s the way to do it. Just enjoy the moment and play with passion and grit, because that’s the way he coached,’” Silver Creek coach Scott Schoen said. “It was just an emotional game for the kids and they responded really well.”
The Dragons led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring the Mustangs 27-4 in the second to break the game open.
“The second quarter we really got going,” Schoen said. “Jaclyn she had 12 points in the second quarter. She just really turned it on.”
So did Silver Creek defensively.
“Our press got going and we got to turning them over,” Schoen said. “The second quarter our energy level just went to a different level. We started sharing the basketball and we had multiple people score.”
Katie Emly and Vic Hutchings added seven points apiece for the Dragons, who had 10 players score.
Makynsie Barger tallied 13 points to lead the Mustangs.
Silver Creek (1-0) will next host Rock Creek at 7:30 p.m. Monday night, while New Washington (0-1) will host Scottsburg on Tuesday.
