SEYMOUR – For the first time in school history the Silver Creek Dragons are headed to the state championship game after they picked up a hard-fought 72-69 win over Indianapolis Crispus Attucks.

Silver Creek used a 9-3 run during the final 2:27 to claim the Semi-State title atLloyd Scott Gymnasium on the Seymour High School campus.

The Dragons will meet Culver Academies in the Class 3A title game Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse at 6pm.

The Dragons (24-3) came in with a major size advantage,with sophomores Trey Kauffman (6-8) and Kooper Jacobi (6-6), along with 6-6 swingman Jack Hawkins. That trio helped Silver Creek turn a seesaw first quarter that had 8 lead changes in to a 12 point lead late in the 2nd quarter.

The Dragons hit 14-of-26 (54 %) from the floor in the first half, while holding the Tigers to a mere 11-of-34 (32 %).

Still the Tigers hung tough, coming back to take a 63-61 lead after a Sincere Mcmahon pair of free throws with 2:54 left.

Silver Creek, however, took control from there. Jacobi hit a pair of free throws to tie the score at 63-63 with 2:27 left, then Hawkins added a pair with two minutes remaining.

The back-breaker came with just over 40 seconds left when Ty Kessinger made the first of a 1-and-1 free throw, but missed the second. Jacobi, however, swooped in and hit a follow-up to give the Dragons a 68-63 lead.

Jacobi finished with 20 points, while Kauffman fought foul trouble all day to finish with 17 and seven rebounds. Hawkins added 14 points and seven boards.
