Dragons News · Boys Basketball: Devils Derail Dragons

SELLERSBURG – One ranked opponent got the best of another in thrilling fashion Friday evening in Sellersburg.

Visiting Class 4A No. 9 Jeffersonville ran away with a 66-54 decision over Class 3A No. 3 Silver Creek behind a 17-4 second-half run and a balanced scoring attack.

Junior point guard Jacob Jones led the Red Devils with 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Sophomore Devean Franklin added 12 points, and juniors Darin Starks and Tre Coleman tallied 10 apiece for Jeff, which bounced back from a loss to No. 2 Carmel in decisive fashion.

The Red Devils (4-1), who have dominated the all-time series against the Dragons (6-1), improved to 7-3 in the teams’ past 10 meetings, although Silver Creek entered having won three of the past four.

“We have a lot of chemistry on offense,” Jones said. “We like to get everyone involved. It just shows everyone can score on our team.”

Coleman, one of the area’s top players who boasts several Division I offers, logged just 1-minute, 38-seconds in the first half due to three quick fouls. Without its leading scorer and rebounder — Coleman came in averaging 14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds — Jeff responded from beyond the arc. A 5-for-10 first-half clip from 3-point range lifted the Red Devils to a 29-23 lead at the break.

“Our guys responding like they did was huge,” Jeffersonville coach Joe Luce said. “I thought we really played well as a team. Jacob Jones really stepped up and had an outstanding game, as well as Darin Starks and Devean Franklin. In the second half, Will Lovings-Watts showed some great basketball and Trevis Oglesby was a big key.”

The Dragons led early before a baseline jumper from Jones made it 6-5, and a monster block by freshman Lovings-Watts paved the way for a Jones 3. Jeffersonville led 12-7 after one following a Starks 3-pointer. Silver Creek opened 3-for-11 from the field.

The Red Devils started the second quarter 1 of 4 from the floor with three turnovers, which helped spark an 8-0 run by the Dragons. Sophomore Kooper Jacobi’s field goal put Silver Creek ahead 15-12 with 5:20 to play in the period.

But Jeff again had an answer.

The Red Devils finished the first half on a 17-8 spurt, highlighted by a tip dunk from Oglesby and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Jones. They held the Dragons to 38-percent shooting in the first half.

“They played great – all the credit goes to them,” Silver Creek coach Brandon Hoffman said. “But I can’t see past the fact that we didn’t compete rebounding, and we didn’t take care of the ball and we didn’t finish around the basket. … There are so many times we shot ourselves in the foot.”

Sophomore big man Trey Kaufman, who led the way for Silver Creek with 16 points and seven rebounds, inched the hosts within 31-28 early in the third, but picked up his fourth foul moments later. A 4-0 Coleman run later extended the Red Devils’ lead to 39-33. Jeff eventually increased it to 45-33.

“We began to attack their pressure a little differently,” Luce said. “We didn’t play on our heels. We played in attack mode.”

Franklin capped Jeffersonville’s 17-4 run with a 3-pointer early in the final period before a steal and bucket by senior Zane Gross cut the deficit to 10 for Silver Creek. It was too little, too late, however, as a Franklin 3-point play and dunk from Coleman sealed it on the Red Devils’ ensuing possessions.
