SELLERSBURG — A night after its first loss — a 40-38 heartbreaker at Seymour — Silver Creek rebounded for its first win over New Albany in over 20 years.
The Dragons outscored the visiting Bulldogs 48-31 over the final three periods on their way to a 58-42 win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
“This is a pretty big win,” Silver Creek senior Jordan Balz said, “and it was a really good bounce back for us.”
Dragon sophomore Jaclyn Emly scored 23 points and got plenty of help from her teammates in the win. Balz added 10 points and freshman Emme Rooney and sophomore Savannah Kirchgessner scored nine apiece in the win.
“These kids have been putting in the time, so coming into a game, we expect them to make shots. They expect to make shots,” Silver Creek coach Scott Schoen said. “They’ve put in the gym time.”
New Albany led 11-7 until Rooney knocked down a 3-pointer late in the first period to get the Dragons within a point.
The first half of the second period went back and forth. The lead changed sides after the first five possessions of the quarter. Three-pointers from Emly and sophomore Abby Grimm gave the Dragons a 20-17 lead. A Rooney layup put Creek on top 26-19 at the break.
A 3-point play by New Albany senior Antonia Ray cut the Dragons’ advantage to 32-28, but back-to-back layups by Jordan Leddon and Rooney pushed the margin to double-digits for the first time at 38-28.
Alayasia Douglas, who hit four 3-pointers and led the Bulldogs with 19 points, banked in a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the third, then hit another on New Albany’s first possession of the fourth quarter to close the gap to 38-34. Consecutive buckets by Emly made it 44-36 and a 3-point play from Balz with 4:38 left essentially put the game away.
Ally Willis added eight points and Ray had six for New Albany, which will look to end a 3-game losing streak next Saturday at home against Corydon Central.
The Dragons open Mid-Southern Conference play Wednesday with a big game at rival Charlestown.
