JEFFERSONVILLE — We have many things to celebrate in Clark and Floyd counties, including prep sports and the athletes who provide us with plenty of thrills during their high school days.
The News and Tribune honors those athletes each year with the NTSPYs, which recognizes the top male and female athlete in each sport. This year’s event will be Tuesday, June 26, at Eastside Christian Church, 2319 Veterans Pkwy., Jeffersonville. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the program starts at 6 p.m. Brent Rogers, of Sounds Unlimited, will once again be the emcee.
This year’s guest speaker will be former University of Louisville basketball player Luke Hancock, a member of the Cardinals 2013 NCAA championship team.
“Last year, thanks to our sponsors, the public was invited to attend for free. We’re doing that again this year,” sports editor Greg Mengelt said. “If you want to celebrate any of the nominees or if you’re just curious as to what it’s all about, I encourage you to attend.”
Finalists have been selected for each sport except those in spring sports, and those nominees will be notified next week. The finalists have been chosen by a combination of coaches’ votes and staff picks, according to Mengelt.
“When it all ends, our committee will get together and pick the winner for each sport. We have a committee of five who all follow local athletics closely throughout the year,” he said.
A portion of sponsor contributions goes to support Special Olympics. Mark Hublar will speak briefly about his involvement with Special Olympics at the event.
Last year nearly 700 people attended the NTSPYs, according to Stephen Allen, marketing director for the News and Tribune.
“It’s important for us to recognize the accomplishments of our high school athletes, and provide them with a fun-filled evening,” Allen said.
