Girls Varsity Basketball · Girls Basketball: Lady Dragons Outlast Corydon to Advance in Sectional

SALEM — The opening act of the Class 3A Salem Sectional will be a tough one to top. In the first quarterfinal Tuesday night, Silver Creek defeated Corydon Central 63-59 in a triple overtime thriller and advanced to the first semifinal Friday night to face Scottsburg (11-13).

The Dragons (10-13) had to battle not only the Panthers but themselves in their gutty first-round victory. Creek had to sidestep its 30 turnovers and overcame a 9-point halftime deficit to avenge a regular season loss to Corydon.

“We didn’t quit and we found a way,” an exasperated Silver Creek head coach Scott Schoen said. “As many times as we gave the ball away, holy cow, we just found a way to win it.”

Freshman Jaclyn Emily led the victors with 17. Taylor Scott added 14, including four triples, all in the second half. Alyssa Wright tallied 11, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line in the final overtime session.

“This was a total team win,” Schoen said. “Everyone contributed. Alyssa Wright hit some huge free throws for us and Taylor Scott [came] off the bench and hits a bunch of 3s to pull us back.”

Wright scored nine in the second half but none bigger than her charity stripe shots down the stretch.

“We shoot a lot of free throws in practice, so I felt confident,” Wright said. “I knew I needed to make those free throws for our seniors.”

Creek stormed back into the game by forcing eight Corydon turnovers in the third and Scott took care of the offense. The senior reserve pumped in eight points out of the locker room, including two bombs.

“We just needed to slow down in the second half and attack the middle of their defense,” Schoen said. “We did a better job of that and Taylor Scott was a lightning rod for us in the second half.”

The Dragons held Corydon to 34 percent shooting and nailed nine 3-pointers for the game.

“For a while, I didn’t think either team wanted to win it,” Schoen joked. “But we found a way. We advanced and now we’re focused on Friday night.”
