Multiple Teams · Football: Dragons Slip Past Franklin County Into Sectional Championship

BROOKVILLE — For the first time in program history, Silver Creek will play for a sectional championship.

The Dragons’ defense, which gives up less than seven points per game, was on top of its game again in a 7-6 victory at Franklin County.

“Once again, they came through,” Silver Creek coach John Dablow said of his D. “It was a great performance and it won the game for us.”

Silver Creek held Franklin County’s Mitchell Orschell — the state’s leading rusher — to a season-low 159 yards and to just 3.6 yards per carry.

The Dragons (9-2) will go to Class 4A No. 9 East Central (8-3) in next Friday’s sectional championship.

“It’s awesome,” Dablow said. “It’s great for these kids and these seniors and our program, as well. We’re very, very proud to have this opportunity.”

East Central beat South Dearborn 51-0 for its fourth shutout of the season. The Dragons have five.

“They’re one of the best teams in the state, if not the best team in the state,” Dablow said of the Trojans. “We know it’s going to be a challenge. They’re at a level we’d like to get. To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.”

After holding the Wildcats to a 3-and-out to start Friday’s game, Jacob Graf went 73 yards for a score. Daniel Barrett added a key extra point and that’s all the Dragon defense needed.

“That was huge,” Dablow said. “Obviously it was the difference in the game. The kicking game, too. It was a slop-fest out there and Jacob Graf made a heck of a run.

Creek had a goal line stand late in the first half and Isesis Lukes had a key interception in the win. After Orschell’s 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, the Dragons stopped him on the 2-point run. Both teams pitched shutouts in the second half.
