SELLERSBURG — Silver Creek took its first step toward a successful postseason with a 25-8, 25-14, 25-12 sweep of Corydon Central on Thursday.
The host Dragons (30-4) will face Scottsburg (25-9) in Saturday’s Silver Creek Sectional semifinal. A date with Brownstown Central (19-14) likely awaits in Saturday’s sectional championship.
“We have the mindset right now of making a statement to show that we’re ready for the sectional,” Silver Creek senior Amy Mobley said. “We need to be as ready for these games as we are the big games. We want to keep the drive and the consistency throughout the tournament and hopefully that will help us succeed.”
Dragons coach Jeff Zimmerman acknowledged that the sectional is likely to come down to Silver Creek and Brownstown, which faces Charlestown (21-9) in Saturday’s semifinal round. The Dragons are 3-0 against the Braves this season, but all three matches went to a deciding set. The veteran coach wants his team to be focused on Scottsburg, which swept North Harrison 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 in Thursday’s second quarterfinal.
“We don’t want Brownstown or anyone else to think that they can beat us,” he said. “We hope to come out and make another statement.”
The Dragons dominated Corydon from the start Thursday. With a 5-3 lead, Creek scored 10 straight points on Ashlee Ullrich’s serve. Kiersten Cooper controlled the opening set with five kills and a block.
“We were really sharp the first set,” Zimmerman said. “We wanted to come out and make a statement. We feel like they did that the first set.”
The Dragons pulled away late in the second set. It was 14-9 before a pair of Karli Ware aces and a Mobley kill helped Creek gain a 17-9 edge. The Dragons took the second set on Corydon’s sixth error.
Silver Creek won the third set with little problem, but there was an issue. Half of the Panthers’ points came on Dragon service errors.
“Serving’s just focus and we feel like they lost a little bit of focus,” Zimmerman said. “We’ve got to make [opponents] earn it every point. We’ve got to be on to beat Brownstown.”
Ware led the Dragons with 12 kills. Cooper had 11 kills and four blocks and Mobley finished with eight kills. Macie Garrison assisted on 29 Silver Creek points and Alisha Harbold had five aces and four digs in the win.
Corydon (4-24) was led by senior Hannah Marshall’s five kills. Sophomore Jessie Johnson had three kills, a block and an ace in the loss.
