Multiple Teams · Football: Younger Dragons Gain Experience in Thrashing of Clarksville

SELLERSBURG — Silver Creek had its way with visiting Clarksville and improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Mid-Southern Conference with a 56-14 victory on Friday.

Despite playing without several key players, including Jacob Garrett, who was out with a slight ankle sprain, the Dragons rolled to a 42-6 halftime lead behind touchdowns from six different players.

“As a coach, that’s fun,” Silver Creek coach John Dablow said of the offensive balance. “We say ‘leave your egos at the door.’ Everybody we have here can get the job done.”

In the first quarter, Jake Lemon scored on a 9-yard pass from Josh Landers. Landers then set up his own 1-yard scoring run with a 24-yard dash to the 1. After Seth Hamilton got Clarksville on the board — the first passing touchdown Creek has allowed this season — with a 58-yard pass from Chasten O’Neal. The Dragons countered with a 1-run plunge from Jacob Graf late in the first quarter.

Ben Landers, Elijah Bays and Heath Knight all scored on touchdown runs in the second period. Knight’s second and third touchdown runs — from 1 and 4 yards out — gave Silver Creek a 56-6 lead. Austin Grant closed the scoring, going 53 yards for a score for the Generals.

The Dragons, who had 310 yards on the ground in the victory, are now 6-0 for the first time in program history.

“It’s been a fun year,” Dablow said. “They’ve worked hard for it and they deserve it at this point.”

It gets tougher from here. The Dragons travel to North Harrison to face the unbeaten Cougars next Friday before a trip to perennial-power Brownstown Central the following week.

“These two games have been circled for us for a while,” Dablow said. “We knew this would be our two toughest of the year. I think our kids will be excited for the opportunity.”
