SELLERSBURG — With his student section surrounding him on the field and his community screaming approval from the stands, Silver Creek football coach John Dablow smiled and nodded his head in approval.
“Long time coming,” the third-year Dragon boss said after his team scored its first win over over rival Charlestown since resurrecting its program six seasons ago. “Long time coming for our program.”
Silver Creek dominated both sides of the football for four quarters, rolling over the Pirates for a 34-0 win in both squads season opener. The Dragons had 421 yards and surrendered just 75. They also had 24 first downs to just three for Charlestown.
Creek converted a fake punt on 4th-and-1 late in the second quarter, scoring on the very next play to grab a 13-0 lead going into halftime and the Dragon defense swarmed.
“It kind of took the lid off,” said Dablow of the trick play that turned to a touchdown late in the first half. “You saw maybe a little of the first game lull to that point but that loosened things up, gave us a cushion and we got rolling from there.”
Jacob Garrett threw the 56-yard scoring pass to Bennett Beyl just before halftime and Brannon Russell scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground for the Dragons. Garrett added a 34-yard scoring run in the third quarter of the victory.
It was plenty for the Dragons defense, which limited the Pirates to three yards in the first quarter and 48 yards before halftime.
“We think our defensive line can really be a strength,” Dablow said. “They really set a tone for us throughout.”
Ben Landers capped the scoring in the game for the Dragons, grabbing an 8-yard touchdown catch late in the third quarter. Garrett finished the game with 121 yards on the ground in the win.
“It’s a great way to start but it’s just a start,” Dablow said. “We have another conference game next week at Salem so we’ve just gotta build from here.”
Charlestown was led by Mitch Wurtsmith, who ran for a team-high 27 yards and caught the lone completion from sophomore quarterback Marion Lukes for nine yards.
Silver Creek will try for its first 2-0 start ever next Friday at Salem. The Lions fell to North Harrison 28-7 on Friday. The Pirates will attempt to recover from their first shutout loss since the 2009 postseason when they host Brownstown Central, which defeated Corydon Central 44-14 in Friday’s opener.
